Good Leaders: Will you watch my TEDx Talk?

The purple jacket was the perfect statement for my first TEDx Talk - Superheros Rescue: Good Leaders Spark Goodness. TED Talks are game-changers for aspiring thought-leaders like me. In April, I did my first "TED talk" - I was the opening speaker at TEDx Gustavus. You can watch my Superheros Rescue: Good Leaders Spark Goodness video below. It's [...]

Good Leaders: How is goodness growing around you?

Becky Bergman was surrounded by blossoming college students as she celebrated her first year as President of Gustavus Adolphus College. One of the true joys in life is watching teenagers grow into young adults in the garden of undergraduate college. It takes a rare individual to thrive as a college president...someone who enjoys digging into the fertilizer. That's [...]

Good Leaders: Where do you see a bright future around you?

Sun time in Arizona provided some luxurious R&R, and gave me an encouraging look into the future. Leisure travel is a luxury. It's an appropriate reward for working hard and building things. Last week I celebrated my 52nd birthday on an unusual spring break trip to Arizona. Normally, the desert sunshine in March is all I need for [...]

Good Leaders: How does excellence radiate around you?

Christmas in Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College is excellence expressed as a value and an outcome. Photo: Gustavus Adolphus College. Alabama football. Harvard Business School. Christmas in Christ Chapel at Gustavus. Is excellence a value or an outcome? Booker T Washington once wrote: Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way. Today, more than [...]

Good Leaders: Where are you sleeping tonight?

Community leader and photographer Cathy tenBroeke will share a message of hope about ending homelessness at the Good Leadership Breakfast this week. Minnesota's Director for [...]

Good Leaders: How are you making your life count?

In the "empty nest" I'm asking: How do I make my life count? The house is quiet now. Loud silence. Like the pause after the airline pilot shuts down the jet engines. Melinda and I just took our youngest child, Anna, off to college and today we are empty nesters. The Personal Finance section of the Wall Street [...]

Who’s growing around you today?

These happy people are the 130 Gustavus Alumni Mentors who are helping students grow into their careers. (That's me, way up at the top!) Autumn in the American heartland means seeds go dormant. But last week was peak growing season for leaders around here. Four years ago, Melinda and I planted two seeds with promise: The Good Leadership [...]

What would 150 years look like to you?

Sesquicentennial means "150th birthday celebration" - congrats to US Bank and Gustavus Adolphus College (Gustavus gave me this shirt!) Happy Birthday to You, Happy birthday to's the most contagious tune in the Western world. When you reach 150 years old, you learn the word: sesquicentennial - pronounced [ses'-kwi-sen-ten'-ē-əl] - meaning marking the completion of a period of 150 [...]

What was amazing about your weekend?

Our daughter, Kathryn Anne Batz, graduated Summa Cum Laude, from Gustavus Adolphus College this past Sunday. What an amazing day! When students graduate from New York University, the ceremony is held at Yankee Stadium. That's the second coolest place in America to hold graduation.  Hollingsworth Field, in St. Peter, Minnesota is the coolest. That was confirmed again this [...]
